Some Definitions ...

For starters, here are a couple of basic definitions:

  • A voice teacher is someone who assists you in the production of sound. He or she will guide you through the physiological functions of singing. Additionally, a voice teacher will assist you in the general understanding of music -- pitch, rhythm, dynamics, etc. Some words associated with voice instruction are "technique" and "musicality."

  • A vocal coach is someone who aids you in the interpretation of music. Words associated with vocal coaching are "emotion" and "interpretation."

Of course, there are some people who perform both of these functions and there is inevitably some overlap between the two.
