Starting at Zero

The Starting at Zero area of our Features section is geared primarily toward new performing artists. We get so much E-mail each month from people asking fairly basic questions about the business of performing that it only seemed logical to share the answers to those questions with everyone.

Our first installment of this occasional series deals with all aspects of performing arts headshots -- what they're for, how to get them taken, and how to avoid getting taken when you get them.  And our second installment looks at the flip side -- your performing arts resume.

Performing Arts
Organization Profiles is happy to announce another new section designed to serve performing artists and arts organizations alike: Profiles. We invite you to submit a profile of your arts organization to let performing artists in your area know what you're all about.

We hope this section serves you well and we expect it to grow rapidly as organizations submit information to us.

It's yet another way you can use as your place online to connect with other members of the performing arts community.

Our Pledge to Performers:
Free Means Free

When we started, we decided that all our information would be free to performing artists. We think it's worth reiterating that pledge, because there are so many ways both on the Web and in the real world that performing artists can be separated from their money.

We're totally free!A number of the online services for performers and their real-world counterparts charge for audition information, sometimes for hundreds of dollars per year. (Some have even stolen our web design and our content, and then charge you money for it!)

The worst part is that the audition information they list is usually freely provided to them, by performing arts organizations and unions.

So, we're either going to stay afloat through the loyalty of our users, or we're going to fold. It's a big risk, but we'd rather risk that than our karma. (You can do your part by patronizing our Media Store and visiting the sites of our advertisers.)
