Scams designed to take advantage of performing artists have been around for a very long time. And, sadly, there seems to be an unlimited supply of victims for these scams.

Sometimes, these scams work because performers’ optimism surpasses their judgment. Sometimes it’s because there is a pool of young or naïve talent that these scam artists view as just ripe for the picking.

Whatever the reason, we want to help you avoid the pitfalls.

There’s a basic rule to follow: You should never — repeat, never — have to pay money in advance to get work. If an organization wants to take your money up front, dig deeper, because there’s invariably an ulterior motive. And that motive is usually to make them a lot of fast cash without providing you with any results.
